Enlightened Society: The I Ching as a Map of Social Evolution with Daniel Hessey, Samten Kobelt and Guest Speaker Eva Wong
October 29-31 2010 Intoductory Weekend
March 11-13 2011: Introductory Weekend
Shambhala's Mountain Center's emerging role in the world is to be a venue where the great wisdom traditions of the world can gather and share their unique gifts of wisdom and compassion. Shambhala is a spiritual umbrella, a protective canopy under which many people with diverse needs and aspirations can gather to benefit from teachings and practices that can awaken their inherent wisdom and compassion. The basis of enlightened society is the understanding that human beings inherently possess wisdom, compassion and goodness. In many cultures throughout history these qualities have been nurtured through meditation and contemplative disciplines.

Forest Retreat: Exploring the Magic of Nature
Dates: October 17 - October 21
Cost: $335 +HST (includes course fee, accommodation, meals and course materials)*
Windhorse Farm is a 168 year-old experiment in sustainability, an experiment based on four general disciplines: stillness, study, contemplation, and work. The Windhorse vision is that there is the possibility of discovering enlightened society. It is our wish that, through providing opportunities for the study and practice of genuine rural disciplines, we can help nudge our world toward sustainability: ecologically, socially, economically, spiritually, and magically. If you are interested in scheduling a weekend seminar or talks, please contact Daniel Hessey at email@example.com
These programs are designed for people who are interested in integral leadership and society. A background in the Yijing is not necessary; curiosity and a delight in learning is! Although the program will be useful to those whose interest is primarily in divination, divination will not be taught, and the emphasis will be on understanding the Yijing as a wisdom text. The weekend programs will present an overview of the Yijing, emphasizing how closely the meaning of the hexagrams follows their structure. We will introduce the map of the sequence of the Yiching and its meaning, and discuss how the sequence describes a process map for societal evolution and integration. We will look in depth at eight hexagrams that form the "backbone" of the Yijing:
1. 乾 Qián: The Father Lineage, and 2. 坤 Kūn: The Mother Lineage
29. 坎 Kǎn: Warriorship, and 30. Lí 籬: Awareness
27. 頤 Yí: Nourishment, and 28. 大過 Dàguò: Great Transcendence
61. 中孚 Zhōngfú: Nurturing, and 62. 小過 Xiǎoguò: Small Transcendence
These discussions will be augmented by sitting meditation and qigong practice. Dr. Eva Wong will give the introductory talk at the Shambhala Mountain Center programs. The I Ching, one of the world’s most ancient wisdom texts, is a compelling vision of a healthy society that is deeply integrated into the natural and spiritual worlds. The text presents a complete visualization of how the worlds of Heaven, Earth and humankind can be integrated into Enlightened Society. The program will introduce Daniel Hessey’s unique translation of the I Ching from the Chinese original. Done under the supervision of Eva Wong, the translation and commentary joins the profound view of Shambhala with the original text to reveal the I Ching as a coherent, integrated process map of human society. Eva Wong will present the opening talk of this program. This weekend initiates an inspiring experiential journey that will open and deepen your understanding of how to lead a truly integral life and help create a good human society on this Earth. The classes and exercises will help demystify ancient language and metaphor, explain the sequence of the hexagrams, and discuss the role of each hexagram to the whole. The course will combine learning, discussion, invocational ceremonies, meditation and qigong. Samten Kobelt will lead us in qigong practice. No previous experience is required. You will come away from this program with powerful new transformational tools that will help you meet the pressing modern challenges—personal, societal, and ecological—that face awake people throughout the world.
